Zelma is coordinator of spiritual care for New Beacon Hospice,New Beacon Hospice, Birmingham a joint venture of Baptist Health System and St.Vincent's Hospital (Daughters of Charity) in Birmingham, Alabama. She began her service with Baptist Health System in 1988, and became the first full-time chaplain for the system’s hospice program in 1989. As the program grew, she became coordinator of spiritual care, supervising the work of the hospice chaplains. New Beacon, formerly known as Unity Hospice, was founded in 1997.

Lincoln Memorial University, Harrogate, TNZelma is an honors graduate and was valedictorian of Lincoln Memorial University, Harrogate, TN, where she majored in mathematics and physics.

University of Virginia's College at Wise

She was also valedictorian of her graduating classes at  The University of Virginia College at Wise, and J. J. Kelley High School, Wise, VA.

After serving as a mathematician with Goodyear International Corporation in Akron, OH, she entered  Southern Baptist Seminary, LouisvilleSouthern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY, where she earned both the Master of Arts in Christian Education, and the Master of Divinity degree with a focus on pastoral care.

She completed extensive clinical training in pastoral care in both Louisville and Birmingham, and is a Board Certified Chaplain.

Zelma's speaking assignments have included numerous university chapel, convocation, and baccalaureate addresses, retreats and focus weeks for Woman’s Missionary Union and campus religious organizations.   In her work as a hospice chaplain, she is frequently asked by patients and their families to officiate at funeral and memorial services.

Her writing has appeared in The Christian Century and other regional and national publications.

Throughout her career, Zelma has been active in a wide variety of mission and ministry projects, including outreach programs for migrant workers in John’s Island, SC, and work with residents of isolated Appalachian mining camps.

She and her husband are members of Baptist Church of the Covenant, an inner-city congregation near downtown Birmingham, affiliated with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and the Alliance of Baptists.

Zelma is the 13th of 14 children of the late Elbert and Bertha Mullins of Wise, Virginia.

Her husband, Wesley M. "Pat" Pattillo, is Associate General Secretary for Communication withWesley "Pat" Pattillo the National Council of Churches, New York City. He previously served with Hong Kong Baptist University in China;  Samford University in Birmingham, AL; and Southern Seminary in Louisville, KY.   Zelma and Pat have traveled in Russia, New Zealand, India, Brazil, China, France, Hungary and  40 other countries of Eastern and Western Europe, Asia, South America, and North Africa.
Laura Grace Pattillo
Their daughter, Laura Grace Pattillo, is assistant professor of English at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, PA. She holds the B.A. from the University of Richmond, VA, and the M.A. and Ph.D. from Louisiana State University, where she taught for seven years.  She also taught at the University of South Carolina in Sumter; and at Indiana University Southeast and Bellarmine University in Louisville, KY. She has studied abroad in Italy and England.

Their son, Stephen Riley Pattillo, operates an international economic Stephen Riley Pattillodevelopment consulting firm in Sydney, Australia.  From 1998-2002 he served as resident director of the overseas office of the US-ASEAN Business Council in Singapore, after serving the Business Council in its Washington DC office. He is a graduate of Duke University, Durham, NC, with additional studies at the University of New South Wales. He enjoys golf, scuba diving, and adventure travel.
